He knew he wasn't that great with sewing, even with all the times that he had watched Rarity and tried to help. Most of the costume was bought from the store anyways, save for a few adjustments he had to make here and there to fit him. It was made for a foal after all. "I've been trying to get better," Spike said, a bit disappointed. He nodded happily to the mixed criticism and stored the outfit back into his bag.
Admittedly, he was still hungry after the sandwich, and eagerly awaited what Rarity might would prepare for them. Spike was a bit baffled by the recounting of the story. This Horizon sounded like a scoundrel, hardly not like the kind of pony who would be friends with miss Rarity! That was, however, until the tale starting to wind down towards the end...
The baby dragon's tiny heart sank. His body felt numb. They were...together?! Not roommates, not old chums, not a long lost relative but...lovers. Rarity had always drawn the attention of the other stallions, Spike knew that. But, he could never think of Rarity's heart as already being taken.
"I, er...Rarity, I..." He couldn't look her straight in the eyes. "I'm really happy for you." The words were hollow, but at least this way he could say them.

Rarity was happy that Spike was content with the situation at hand. She finished her salad and got back to working on Spike's costume. "But sometimes, I swear, that pony can be SO stubborn. Sometimes he's so selfish, too!" Rarity seemed more frustrated at this pony than in love with him. Now, I believe I can finish the rest of this cape by myself. The silk hat fits perfectly. and the little moustache is just adorable! I believe that's all for now...I suppose that's all I needed from you at the moment."
Rarity set the costume aside and sat on her couch, thinking about Horizon. Her thoughts soon faded as she remembered she had company. "Spike, now...this may come as a weird surprise to you, but, I have a slight feeling you like me slightly more than a friend likes another? It's merely a hunch, but..." Rarity looked away, hoping Spike would interrupt her so the conversation could continue.

A strange feeling overcame Spike. He felt...uncomfortable with Rarity right then. The mare's spellbinding presence did not have its hold on him and the baby dragon found it difficult to even maintain eye contact with her. He mustered a smile at Rarity's compliments, but the words didn't fill him with content like they usually did.
Then the unicorn brought up the question he had dreaded.
He thought they had connected when they were falling down to their deaths the day he had rampaged Ponyville. Her gentle touch...her look of understanding...what had that meant then? Rarity had paused and an awkward silence fell upon the boutique. "Well, um...you're really...I think you're really...to me." Spike was stumbling over his words. Why couldn't he just say it? She was very special to him. More special than Horizon was to her, though? Tears started to well up in his eyes.
"I gotta go, Rarity. Chores and stuff," he said quickly. Spike made for the door without even looking back.
