Cheerilee couldn't believe it was actually happening no. A date, with Twilight Sparkle? She had spent some time with her in her library before and gotten to know her - especially more of late. But this? This was a little bit more formal. Cheerilee hadn't gone so far as to put on clothes or anything, but it WAS an official date between the two ponies. She had found that she liked the pony so far - she was rather smart, smarter even than Cheerilee was, in her opinion. Though, Cheerilee had never had the highest self-esteem, so she was hardly of a fair judge to herself. Still, she admired Twilight Sparkle - at least as intelligent as the schoolhouse teacher, and still ten years Cheerilee's junior. She sat down in the café in a small booth for two. She ordered a small unsweetened cup of black coffee to start her off; she could go for thicker drinks, the creamier stuff, later in the date.
The son hung low in the sky, about to set - they had agreed to meet at around 8 PM, and stay to enjoy the late-night jazz show over some coffee and chatting. It seemed exactly the sort of thing the both of them were comfortable with; she didn't sense Twilight would want to go to movies or a dinner on a first date. They wanted to get a feel for each other romantically, first. The mare blushed a little at the thought, brushing her mane; she wore it down today, not in the pigtails she had been favoring of late. Glancing at the clock, she found the time - 7:57 PM. She looked out the window expectantly, sighing. This was going to be a nice, pleasant night, she thought.
And she would get to spend it with a wonderful mare.

Twilight trot towards the café, taking in the scenery. She was busy thinking of what she'd done. Twilight was open minded, though she never thought she liked mares. She still didn't know, honestly. She wanted to give Cheerilee a fair chance like she had with Fenris and Zathra. Who knew, maybe since she gave Cheerilee a chance, they might have a wonderful time. Twilight hadn't mentioned the date to anypony. She guesses it was because she was too shy to.
Twilight arrived at the café just as the clock ticked 8:00. Normally she would have been here sooner had she not been thinking. She gave a swift glance around to find Cheerilee waiting for her, sipping a coffee. A soft smile came across her face as she moved to sit across from her. "Cheerilee!" She greeted her, "Its... nice to see you again." She said taking a slight pause to find the appropriate words. She tried to keep herself from blushing, although as she found out on her other two dates you cant stop it, but only delay the inevitable.

Cheerilee smiled earnestly up at the other pony as she entered, sitting down. She found herself blushing a bit - it had been a while since she had been on a date, but she hadn't forgotten her courtesies. Thankfully, though, the blush didn't last too long, nor did it show up well on her cheeks, which were a magenta-red shade anyway. She smiled at the smaller pony, reaching over to touch her hoof against Twilight's for a moment - they were both scholarly ponies, which often led to some interesting conversations in topics that neither expected most ponies to be well-versed in.
"Ah! Just on time Twi. It's great to see you, too." She said, picking up her coffee and sipping on it; one of the waiters saw the new mare sitting at the table and made a stop. "Oh! Twilight. Here. I'll pay for you...." She insisted before Twilight could even order anything; she had yet to finish her first coffee, so she would wait to order something else. She smiled fondly at the pretty mare, waiting for her to order and the waiter-pony to be off before she would begin speaking to her in earnest.

Twilight relished the touch of Cheerilee's hoof. One thing was sure, her coat was very soft. When Cherry spoke up about paying, she was about to argue with her, saying she could pay for her own drink, but Cheerilee's mind was obviously set on it. She simply asked the waiter for whatever he recommended that wasnt too bitter. With her, coffee was a love hate relationship. She liked the taste, but had read to many studies on it to drink it often as she would like to.
After a few minutes, her drink was delivered. She took a careful sip, wondering how exactly to start the conversation. They couldn't just stare at eachother all day, could they? "So Cheerilee..." She said breaking the semi-silence, "Why me? Why did you ask me out rather than all the ponies in Ponyville?" She had a good guess of the answer, but she wanted to hear what she had to say.

Cheerilee watched as Twilight ordered - she was rather conservative with her order; she apparently didn't get coffee often, or at least not here, as she had to ask the waiter what wasn't bitter. She waited until Twilight's drink was ordered to begin speaking, but it appeared Twilight had a question for her first. She smiled fondly at her, sipping from her own black, bitter coffee - she reflected, then, on the differences in their coffee and what it reflected in themselves. The sweeter drink Twilight chose implied inexperience with coffee, and perhaps in life, to an extent. Cheerilee, instead, had a rawer drink; she had started with sweet coffee, too, but over the years she needed stronger, more caffeinated drink to sate her tastes. She shook her head - she was looking too deeply into things, as she always did. She looked up: Twilight was speaking now, and she listened, ears perking up a bit as she shifted, eyes meeting the unicorn's.
"Oh! Well, I met you just going to the library a week or two after you arrived here, and I guess you just...you're pretty. Attractive and smart, and you understand a lot of things that emotionally, most ponies your age don't." She said in a level voice as she always did, able to fully describe her feelings for Twilight with ease; she was always rather aware of her feelings for others, and even though she blushed a little, she did manage to describe how she felt.
"I feel like maybe I just need to get to know you more." She said, glancing over at the pianist-pony, sitting down to play a song. She flicked her tail.
"Oh! I didn't mean to weird you out, with the random date. I just like you, is all. How do you feel about..." She motioned around herself. "...this?"

Twilight thought about what Cheerilee said. She called her pretty. It seemed like everypony suddenly thought so too. Was it just chance, or.... She didn't think about it much more. She would think about that later, for now she just tried to enjoy herself. "Hm? Oh, its really nice! Its not to formal, and I like it that way." Twilight had her share of formal back in Canterlot...
"And im fine with you asking me out, Cheerilee. I try to be open minded about these things, and I wanted to give you a chance if you really meant it. You seem like you do..." She looked around the room, shrugging off the faintest of blushes. "But im glad we could be together for awhile." She said, offering a sweet smile. She took another sip from her coffee. It wasn't sweet, but it wasn't bitter enough for her to gag, so it was all good.

Cheerilee felt butterflies in her stomach at Twilight's smile - she had a very nice smile, one that was quite sincere. Sometimes when ponies smiled she found that they smiled in falsehood; she could see it on their mouths, hear it in their speech. It was one of the reasons she was so self-conscious about her looks. She reached over to Twilight, letting a hoof touch the other mare's as she glanced at the piano played, who was in the middle of a pleasant, slow movement, the notes ringing through the ear and making Cheerilee's ears stand on end as she listened.
"Pretty, isn't it?" She asked, sipping her coffee. The sunset, Twilight, the piano music, all of it....it was wonderful. She looked back at the other mare. "D'you like music?" She asked casually. "I mean. I know you're from Canterlot....wouldn't you have a lot of theaters and concert halls there?" She hadn't been to Canterlot in...years. And she hadn't stayed long enough to become familiar with the place at any level.

Twilights wandering eye was pulled back to Cheerilee with the sensation of a hoof touching her own. It was both a comforting and a happy kind of feeling. She never really thought it could be so nice. Dating a mare, that is. Of course, most the reading material she read never mentioned it. Hm... Maybe she'd have to dig around some of the storage to see if she missed any reference books on the matter....
As Twilight looked around, it was indeed pretty. Cheerilee too. It felt weird thinking so, but it was different. Like an.... experience. "Well, there were plenty of places like that in Canterlot. They were fun to go to, when I wasn't busy with my nose in a book..." She said, taking a crack at herself. She could joke about it because she didn't care what ponies thought, she was proud of her pursuit of knowledge. "The music here is really calming, though. Its nice." She commented.

Cheerilee nodded in agreement; the place had a strange, very particular feeling about it. Perhaps it was the beautiful orange sunlight of late evening filtering through the windows, illuminating the little out-of-the-way cafe with a natural light that complemented the contemplative music quite nicely. Maybe it was the music itself, the piano player now running through a hoof-tapping waltz. Maybe the smells, she considered? It smelled like a bakery in here, along, of course, with the heavy scent of coffee. She inhaled deeply, letting go or Twilight's hoof and looking over at her. The whole place was nice, and she could tell that Twilight had been taking in the sights and sounds, just like her. She gave a little laugh, nervous at first, but soon turning into something more genuine, smiling happily at her friend .
"So..." she began, remembering something else she had wanted to ask Twilight but she never felt was appropriate until now. "Aren't you Princess Celestia's personal apprentice? I've never heard of something like that happening. What's that like?" She asked hopefully; after all, Twilight was probably one of the privileged few who actually knew the Princess on anything resembling a personal level.

Cheerilee's question came to a slight surprise to Twilight. Of course it was only time until it popped up. She pondered the question, mainly on just how much she should tell Cheerilee. She read dating took being a good listener, so she didn't want the whole day to end up being about her. Of course there was a happy medium, Twilight was sure Cheerilee would like to know a certain amount about her apprenticeship with the Princess.
"Well..." She began, "I am the Princess's apprentice. She's teaching me about magic, right now the magic of friendship." Alot of ponies laughed or scoffed at the fact she was studying magic, but it was so much more powerful than they could imagine. "She doesn't give me to much, though she makes sure im well off. She's very wise and nice once you get to know her. I still have along way to go and a lot to learn before I get to even a fraction of her magical prowess, however..."
