The castle was ruled not by the Princesses this night, but by silence. A deathly silence that crept over the corridors and enveloped the courtyard: not even the noise of the small creatures was present. Darkness befell Canterlot, and the whole of Equestria was consumed with concern at the night sky. Where once the Moon shone brightly, stealing the Sun's glory (and at one point staying out for too long), there was now only the faint outline of the celestial body. A lunar eclipse.
Equestria, being ruled by Celestia and Luna, was not used to such a thing happening. Princess Celestia and Princess Luna both ruled over the Sun and Moon respectively, with Celestia ruling over both in Luna's abeyance. The two had, excluding Luna's time as Nightmare Moon, cooperated well with each other, and the issue of eclipses never arose during their reign. Even in the time of Luna's rebellion, the moon had never become been shadowed so. Ponies in the streets stood aghast, those inside silently discussing with others the possible happenings within the castle that caused such a thing to happen.
Inside the castle, not even the guards were at their routine posts; they had all been ordered outside of the castle for the time being, and none dared question Princess Celestia's orders. They stood, as usual, without emotion, though the slightest of tremors indicated fear was present. The castle looked abandoned behind them; no visible light emanated from the castle, though the Princesses had retreated to their chambers, where Celestia was barely able to restrain her temper.
"Luna! What you did was unacceptable! Do you know what could have happened if anypony saw the Moon?" Celestia stated, her usually calm demeanor showing signs of genuine anger.
Luna's gaze was distant, though she smiled slightly. Celestia's words seemed not to even bother her. She simply looked through the other alicorn, silent. Ever since her return from the moon and transformation back to herself, she'd been silent, and though Celestia attributed the slight eccentricities of her younger sibling to having been gone for so long, she had also remembered the parasitic creatures she'd discovered. Luna had been cured, however, though this seemed to state otherwise. She'd fallen into a state of mental disarray recently, though her inverted nature prior to her falling apart made it somewhat easy to hide from the masses. This recent event, however, was something that wouldn't be tolerated; Luna had engraved in the moon a spell, or rather curse, that would have inflicted serious injury to those that read it. This was foolish of Luna. This was unacceptable! It was...
Insane.
Celestia's limited knowledge of the parasites that had used Luna as a host in her transformation to Nightmare Moon prevented her from expecting something of this sort to happen to her sister. With the letters to Ponyville sent off in the evening, shortly after the moon's appearance on the horizon and subsequent blocking out, Celestia simply looked to her sister, feelings of anger replaced with those of sorrow.
"Dear sister, what has happened?
