ABOUT THE CHARACTER –
Personality: Solo Frets is not an admirable personality, but it's understandable to people who know what he's been through emotionally. His self doubt is his greatest enemy. He has the mindset that he shouldn't be trusted with responsibility, a word he dislikes, almost fears it on fact. This self doubt has also affected his trust in others. He's the very image of the old saying "You can't trust others if you can't trust yourself".
Solo Frets also has a side of him that's just straight-up depressed. This depression comes from varying sources. Sometimes he misses Dage or his parents, who he hasn't seen since leaving to live with Dage. Sometimes he feels a nostalgic yearning for the good ol' days before he got his cutie mark. And sometimes he just feels like being alone.
The depressed side of him is barley noticeable by anyone but him though as he has developed methods of cheering himself up by using humour to hide his feelings. For this reason, he doesn't take almost anything very seriously. His humour can make him seem somewhat mean, but he rarely means to actually insult anyone.
His general mood also depends on the last song he played. If he's been playing heavy metal, country, or rock, he has a very upbeat attitude. If he sings a sad song, he gets slightly depressed and needs to lighten the mood somehow. Solo can't stand negative atmosphere, and has a compulsive need to lighten the mood somehow whenever those around him (or he himself) are in an argument or a bad mood.
History: Solo Frets was born and grew up in a town near Ponyvillle; not a small town but not a big one, just right. As with most unicorn babies, Solo would have spontaneous bursts of magic. One thing he would do a lot was pull on the strings of a toy guitar he had. When by the time he was in school, he was aware of this habit he had when he was a baby, and was interested in learning how to play the guitar and other instruments. In school he was always the popular one; cool looking, the best at dodge ball in his school or Ponyville's, and above all he was a fun person to be around.
One day he joined a school play as a musical conductor, using his magic to control multiple instruments at once. That was the day he got his cutie mark (a guitar in front of two drum sticks in an 'X' shape). He was exited until he learned from an overheard conversation that musicians don't usually make a lot of money unless they're REALLY good. He never overcame the sense of self doubt he felt that day, and decided he would try to earn a DIFFERENT cutie mark!
The next few years of his life were spent in a sort of "Cutie Mark Crusader" phase, and in almost complete denial that he ever earned his cutie mark. Those who thought he was cool and fun to hang out with felt shunned as he would burst out in anger whenever they mentioned his cutie mark. This drove his parents crazy as he would often be doing something dangerous in his quest of a "new" cutie mark (such as when he lost almost his entire ear to a skateboarding stunt gone wrong).
When it was time for him to live on his own, he met an old pony who, when asked, told Solo Frets to simply call him "Dage". When Dage learned of Solo's cutie mark denial, told him that he could teach him how to be a good enough musician to make a living. Solo was reluctant, but accepted the generous offer. Dage taught Solo how to play the instruments much better, but also taught him about stage presence and reading the crowd. The two became inseparable friends and started to play shows together. All was good, until the reality of how old Dage was struck Solo like an arrow through the heart. On his death bed, Dage gave Solo Frets his old acoustic guitar. Even though he doesn't use it in shows very often (he finds it disrespectful as it was Dage's guitar) it is his most prized possession.
Solo Frets is now a fairly popular One-Pony-Rock-Band, and is always improving. He's not as world famous as celebrities like the Wonderbolts, but he enjoys his traveling lifestyle. His only Permanent residence is in Ponyville, as he considers it a perfect quiet town to settle down in whenever he gets back from a road trip.
OTHER CHARACTER INFO –
RP sample:
Solo Frets was in a bad place right now. Actually, he was in his favorite place in the world; a stage. He was cleaning up the stage after a charity show. That was the problem, he wasn't getting paid very much for this show because it was for charity, specifically "underprivileged" fillies.
The only thing he could think about was how he was going to eat tomorrow. Was he going to need to play in the street with a donation cup or something?
"Excuse me Mr. Frets." Solo spun around as if someone had yelled "BOO!". He saw a little filly with a little bag in front of him. He gave the filly a look like he wanted to say "What do you want kid, I'm busy!" but actually ended up saying "Hey kid, what can I do for you?" trying to act interested. The filly used his nose to push the little bag closer to Solo. "Is it OK if I donate my allowance to those poor fillies?"
Solo was caught by surprise. He looked at the little guy with a moment of admiration for the kids generosity, but quickly saw an opportunity and seized it. "That's very nice of you kid" he said as he took the bag.
As the filly was trotting away, Solo took the bag and hid it away in with the rest of his equipment. It looks like he was going to get too eat tomorrow after all.
